A clear case for an effective Communications strategy

The past few days have likely made one thing abundantly clear: An effective communications strategy is key to operational success of any organisation, commercial or otherwise.

Whatever form and discipline of communications we practice - Public Relations, Marketing communications or Stakeholder communications - we can draw lessons from the pandemic that highlights the ever-increasing need for its effective practice.

Why do we need a clear communications strategy? There are four essential outcomes:

  1. Communicate to provide clarity. When we have clarity, everyone is on the same page, and we can move forward much more quickly.

  2. Communicate to eliminate confusion. Confusion wastes precious time for action. Confusion breeds mediocrity and mistakes. Confusion destroys effectiveness.

  3. Communicate to navigate uncertainty. Uncertainty creates inaction. In a time when action is required, uncertainty postpones it.

  4. Communicate to build confidence. Confidence lifts. It creates opportunities. When people have confidence, they can act more decisively.

The key to effective communications lies in the ability to tell a good story.
