Dads, teach courage in failure.

Dads are often stereotyped as strong, courageous heroes. And sometimes, that drives the intense need to show the strong side and hide any vulnerabilities. But there is courage in vulnerability. That is one thing dads are well-positioned to teach us, how to show courage in failure.

One of the things we see often is the struggle to accept failures. The magnitude doesn't matter, but we can grow up without knowing how to handle it when things unexpectedly don't go our way. That's okay. We simply need to start learning how to face challenges, weather adversity and accept failure. We need to know that it is okay to make mistakes or fail. That failure isn't the opposite of success; it is part of it. And the most significant thing you can teach is that even in failure, there is much to gain, as "failure is the best teacher you can ever have."

This impacts what we do at work because the ability to accept, learn, and grow from failure is at the core of our belief in constantly testing and experimenting with ideas. It's about managing risk, as navigating risk is part and parcel of what we do. The concept of testing and experimenting is rooted in the belief that rapid prototyping of business solutions will yield the data needed to navigate risk in the best posture possible for success.

Ultimately, how we face failure comes down to a choice. What we choose to do in the face of it. That choice will determine our focus and reality moving forward. That lesson is something we hope all children will learn from a very young age.
